Izola becomes an orphan.

Izola found herself alone, living on the street. She had to learn to steal food to survive. At this time in history, factory workers earned so little that they couldn’t afford to keep their children. They put them out on the street, forcing them to survive by theft. They were called street urchins. Izola was now one of these children of the street.

There were so many homeless children, cities created orphanages. The orphanages hired men to walk the streets looking for abandoned children and bring them to the orphanage. On Izola’s fourth day of wandering the streets, a man from the orphanage spotted her.
